Gladness is a quiet, thoughtful girl who enjoys academics and spiritual activities. She prefers her own company and has few friends, but her peaceful nature and gentle spirit are her strengths. Her mother says she never complains, always accepts what is given, and encourages her when things are tough.
Gladness lives with her mother and siblings. Her parents are separated, and her mother, a former food vendor, is now trying to rebuild after losing her shop. They survive with support from their church and from selling goods online. Despite all this, Gladness remains grateful and hopeful.
